Sobre este producto
  • Although the Jains are relatively few in number today, as compared to the sects of Hinduism or divisions of Buddhism, they remain one of the most important components of Indian culture. Originating slightly earlier than Buddhism in the idea-upheavals that characterized India several centuries before Alexander's invasion, they have often been one of the dominating forces in Indian thought. In addition to creating important art and architecture they have contributed many basic ideas to both Buddhism and Hinduism. They remain today an integral part of the culture of the Indian subcontinent. Jaina Sutras, originally published in the Sacred Books of the East series, under the general editorship of F. Max Müller, contains the major documents held authoritative by both sects of Jains. The first volume contains the Akaranga Sutra (rules of disciplines for the Jain monk or ascetic, theoretical aspects of Jain religious philosophy) and the Kalpa Sutra (lives of Jain saints, especially Mahavira, the near contemporary of the Buddha). The second contains the Uttarahyayana Sutra (mostly instructions to the Jain religious) and the Sutrakritanga (controversies and clash of ideas between Jains, the Buddha Gautama, and various Hindu schools). All four of these important works have been translated and extensively annotated by Professor Jacobi, one of the world's foremost experts on Indic literature.
