- An all-star' cast convenes to perform music by Armenia's greatest living composer, Tigran Mansurian, on this long-awaited 2-CD set. Kim Kashkashian's critically acclaimed 'Hayren - Music of Komitas & Mansurian', helped to establish an understanding of the emotional climate of Mansurian's music and its referents. "A revelation...This disc makes one impatient for the sequel." (International Record Review). Now comes the recording that will put Mansurian on the map and in perspective - a powerful, compelling, highly original double album featuring Kim Kashkashian and friends including violinist Leonidas Kavakos, Jan Garbarek, the Hilliard Ensemble (currently celebrating their 30th anniversary) and the Munich Chamber Orchestra under its redoubtable conductor Christoph Poppen. Four major compositions are featured: the Viola Concerto 'And then I was in time again...' , the Violin Concerto, Lachrymae for soprano saxophone and viola, and Confessing with Faith, for viola and four voices. Three of the works receive world premiere recordings. Kim Kashkashian (herself of Armenian descent) has for years been one of Mansurian's most committed supporters. In 1999 she and Jan Garbarek came together to play his music at an ECM-initiated 'Armenian Night' at the Bergen Festival. The seeds of Monodia were sown then... These recordings show the unique manner in which Mansurian's music addresses both the development of contemporary music and the soundscapes of his troubled homeland, including its sacred and secular music traditions. Mansurian's friends and contemporaries have included Giya Kancheli, the late Alfred Schnittke, and Arvo Prt. This CD package includes a 60-page additional 3-language booklet with liner notes by Hanspeter Krellmann, an interview with Tigran Mansurian and Kim Kashkashian, Armenian song texts, and numerous session photographs
