Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry. Made by hand in the USA, this retablo plaque honors Saint Colette of Corbie. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon hand-carved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint's life. Colette was born a child of grace to a 60-year-old mother whose incesstent prayers were finally answered with her birth. Colette would grow to become a French abbess who reformed the Poor Clares, returning them to the original Franciscan model. During her life, she founded 18 monastaries of the Poor Claires, of which the Colettines branch still exists. Credited with miracles regarding childbirth, Saint Colette de Corbie is recognized as the patron saint of expectant mothers to be and women who desire to conceive. 'Beloved St Colette, miracle worker, I ask for your help in conceiving a child, may I have a healthy pregnancy and delivery and greet my child in joy'
