A brilliant full moon is visible in the sky as the scene is presented in the evening. The Starry Night is an example of Van Gogh's powerful, expressive brushstrokes and brilliant colors. In order to produce a rough surface, he applied the paint to the canvas using a thick impasto method. The whirling clouds and the wind-tossed trees give the picture a dynamic vitality, and the painting also conveys a strong sense of movement.
