- Kurt Kramer was five when he and his parents immigrated from Germany after WWI and moved to the Heights community, a beautiful peninsular between the bayou and the bay in the Florida panhandle. Their home on Hyer’s Point sat on pristine, undeveloped acreage of live oaks and magnolia trees with frontage on the bayou. Kurt grew older listening to the heated debates about Hitler and the Nazis around the beer counter at Pfeiffer’s Grocery Store. As a graduate of ‘Old Miss,’ Kurt dreamed of becoming a medical doctor and marrying his sweetheart, Marlies Schmidt, the daughter of their only neighbor on Hyer’s Point. Money was tight because of the Depression, so in 1937, the Nazi government helped the family to return to Germany, and Kurt attended medical school tuition-free. Unfortunately, it was a mistake, and serious problems developed with the SS and the Gestapo when Jewish ancestry became an issue. Kurt faced tragedies and collaborated with British MI6 agents while trying to escape from Germany. Excerpt from Chapter 43. May 1, 1939: “As an American citizen in Germany, I can’t go home because the SS and Gestapo agents are after me. Forced into the German military, I will swear allegiance to a man I despise—for that, I will lose my American citizenship and become a German citizen again. And last but not least, the SS will declare me a Jew, and I’ll lose my German citizenship. So the hell with this coffee? Let’s have another beer.”
