- Subic Bay: Back to Olongapo is a peacetime military adventure experienced by young, aggressive Marines in the Philippines. In 1986, Subic Bay Naval Station was America’s most strategic military base in the Western Pacific, a critical logistical port for carrier battle groups, battle ship battle groups, submarines and Marine Amphibious Units. These eager Jarheads were tasked with a diversified mission that included perimeter security, jungle patrols, entry/exit control and an air/land/sea Quick Reaction Force. They also secured Subic Bay’s dirty secret: nuclear arsenals. The experience included a people’s revolution, labor strike, espionage, terrorism and communism in defense of the most vital assets in the Navy’s 7th Fleet. But when the liberty bell was sounded, the aggressive energy that their mission required was unleashed upon the base town of Olongapo, Sin City, a k a Devil Dog paradise. In addition to a row of three ribbons for meritorious duty, when their 15-month tours ended, binge drinking, bar brawls, smashing, thrashing, car crashing, property destruction, unwanted pregnancies, NJPs, court martial, adultery, divorces and NIS investigations were left in their wake.
